Eddie Macon's Run in HiDef

No doubt 1983 must have been an exciting time for movies in Laredo! Imagine hearing that big time TV star John Schneider, Bo Duke himself, is staring in a move to be filmed in our dusty little unpaved town. Glorious! While I am a tad too young to remember the event, I'm sure the buzz around the city was  clearly evident. After all, Dukes of Hazard was still a huge hit on the small screen with over 17 million weekly viewers.

Now, a more professional and dedicated blog would feature maybe interviews with those that remember the filming of the movie, or at least newspaper clippings or TV shows from the time period to offer a more complete post on this film. Unfortunately, I am not such a blogger. What I can offer you are vid-caps from the movie. Previously, the film was featured in grainy VHS quality, but it was recently released on high definition blue ray. So, take a gander at stills from the movie, Eddie Macon's Run.

Santos downtown

I miss vendors hawking goods from their vans.

Glorious 1983 and major streets unpaved. Of course

I always vote Daniel Valdez

Joe Brand downtown. Nice

I get all my shoes at Scooti. You should too.

Careful w/ cartonero on the tricycle!

Before Bordertown TV show, we had this guy

Dude, this guy is driving down the WRONG way

Brunch NOT at Danny's? Shocked!

My abuelo would dress just like this in the early 80s

"Inseminoid" playing at the Plaza. Surprised its kinda intense.

Joe Brand went HARD on the product placement.

La Posada looks sorta classy here.

Look at the two sombrero wearing extras hanging out w/ Tom

This is one beautiful shot

Lone Star and Cops. Typical Friday night.

Is this Park St? Martin High?

Look at this scene here. Looks unchanged.

No se fia (ni preguntes)

I work all over Laredo, sometimes picking up merchandise sometimes delivering it (I will leave out the specifics, just in case the good ol' boys at the DA's office are reading this lowly blog). Nonetheless, I found myself far away from the cozy comforts of Santo Nino, TX in the unknown parts of west Laredo.

Having toiled all day under the unforgiving sun and having driven around in search of product, I became a thirsty traveler with an unending thirst. I usually do not find myself west of Santa Maria, but on this particular, odd Sunday morning, I stumbled across an oasis, amidst rumbling locomotives.

Much to my disappointment, this oasis of love and beer, this Mecca of liquid from the gods, had yet to swing open its doors for business, and being it was God's day of rest, and a non-Dallas Cowboys Sunday, I was rejected the opportunity to guzzle down a cold, domestic beer.

No matter how much I kicked at the door, yelled through the windows, or pumped my  fist in an Eddie Macon-fury way, the doors simply did not open for this disenchanted south Laredoan. It was probably all for the best, for all I had in my pocket were 4 varos, not enough for even a 6 pack of Bud, and having learned from their signage, they are not to keen on credit. Oh well, off I go to el Hevito then.

Eddie Macon runs to Netflix

One of the favorite movies from local bloggers has appeared on instant viewing for Netflix. Eddie Macon's Run, from 1983, is every local filmmakers wet dream, including yours truly. It has big Hollywood stars and more importantly, several scenes from the movie where filmed here in Laredo! Pretty neat. I imagine the local hoopla back in 1983 over this movie was akin to the hoopla over the much hyped Bordertown TV show. I was not around here in 1983, so maybe KeyRose or some of the other elder statesmen can enlighten us on that topic.

The official US DVD release is hard-to-find and it seems to be OOP, nonetheless, the Netflix version has a top-notch picture.

For those of you without Netflix access, it can also be rented on Amazon for three dollars.

Lasanbe.com goes mainstream

Congrats to my colleagues at Lasanbe.com and Laredospeaks among others for their frontpage publicity in the Laredo Morning Times' article on local blogs. Keyrose, of Lasanbe.com, has gone mainstream. Next month you will see him on the cover of GQ and RollingStone. He has hit the bigtime like George Jefferson. In all seriousness, sweet bread! I'm glad that the hard work of the local bloggers is getting noticed.

Keyrose and others were present at the screening of 80's movie, Eddie Macon's Run, over at Candela's Restuarant, this past Saturday. Due to urgent business matters, I was unable to be present, however, I heard the turnout was really good. Next time we have another screening I hope to be there for sure. I'll take a 12 pack of Schlitz. Any ideas for another Blogger's event?? I'm open to suggestions (I'm also open to donations jejeje.)

Update: Eddie Macon's Run

Seems that I was outbid on ebay for the used VHS copy of Eddie Macon's Run. Dang, someone actually paid 28 dollars for that. I dont have deep pockets. However, I did come across an old HBO trailer on utube for those of you that are interested. You can go here! If you, hopefully KeyRose can upload a couple of scenes from to the internets like he promised. Changuitos.

Eddie Macon's Run

"You didn't know that," my friend yells at me in a flabbergasted shock. "I'm sorry! I didn't live here in the 80s" I respond annoyed like always. It turns out that there was a certain movie by the name of Eddie Macon's Run that was, according to my friend, partly filmed here in the early 1980s. The movie starred John Schneider (from Dukes of Hazzard) and Kirk Douglas, and from what I understand there are certain scenes that were filmed downtown and at the lake. I wanted to at least check the movie out, so I looked for a VHS copy on Ebay and lo and behold, there were several copies on VHS, but they were on sale for a whopping $20.00! Ouch! I don't think that movie is out on DVD yet, but I could be mistaken. Anyone our there alive when this movie was shot in town? Share the memories! Or at least pass me a copy of the movie!

BorderTown Laredo

It has been over 10 years since the show aired, and its high time it got a bit of coverage on this old blog. But first I have to watch it. N...
